WE HAD NO PLANS TO GET ANOTHER DOG

Four days after we said good-bye to my first therapy dog, we were looking at a picture of a little dachshund. We had no plans to get another dog but had to get a look at this little one. “Her name is Dixie and she needs a home” was all my husband needed to open his heart to her. Unlike many shelter and rescue dogs, Dixie probably had a pretty good life. She was chubby to the point of needing to be carried up steps. She was as cuddly as a stuffed toy, quiet and sweet.

When Dixie was confident enough in her new life, she became my third therapy dog. After getting down to a healthy 11 lbs, she was left with a little fat “apron” of skin that has become her pet therapy signature. When held heart to heart, she feels like a bag of warm Jell-O. Specially selected to work with the Crisis Response Team, Dixie travels to schools to give comfort after the loss of a beloved teacher or classmate due to tragedy. She willingly shares her warm little body, licks the tears of the broken-hearted, and holds an irreplaceable part of my heart.
