THEY ARE OUR BEST FRIENDS

Almost a decade ago, my husband and I decided that we wanted to share our lives with a four-legged companion. After discovering an abandoned litter of four-month-old chocolate labs, we picked out a little girl and gave her a boy’s name – Shamus.

Shamus is the most sweet, gentle, and happy soul I have ever come across. She is pure love, and she teaches me every day about the importance of being kind, compassionate, and patient. She reminds me to be a better person – to be more like her.

A year after we adopted Shamus, we decided that we craved more of that kind of love in our lives and found an emaciated little black mutt at eleven months old. I fell in love with her picture immediately. Dagney has extreme anxiety issues, but is strong in her own way. She teaches me about resiliency, and what it means to be a survivor.

Then our third little girl came bouncing into our lives. It was love at first sight when I saw Kona, and knew she had to become a part of the family. Kona is a bed-hogging, towel-stealing, and teabag-ripping ball of pure personality who has shown me to truly do what makes you happy.

Spending time with our girls is my primary way of coping with my anxiety, because what they teach me above all else is how to live in the moment. These three dogs give us unconditional love, make us laugh, and remind us of the good in the world. They have changed our lives, offering a love that is completely loyal and unjudging. They are our best friends.
