HIS PURE JOY WAS IMMEDIATELY EVIDENT
In the summer of 2016, I found myself single and dog-less for the first time in more than a decade, so I began toying with the idea of adopting a dog. Most of my free time is spent outdoors hiking, camping, and horseback riding. I missed having a furry companion to share those adventures with. Knowing I needed just the right partner, one who was active, smart and friendly, I was picky and felt when the time was right, I would find the right fit.
I saw Hyde on the SPCA’s page and his perky ears and alert, playful expression caught my attention. Then I saw the description and it literally brought tears to my eyes. He was a terrier mix, just under six months old, and had been brought to the SPCA with a broken leg which had to be amputated. His surgery was a success and he was ready for his forever home, which I knew would be with me.
First thing the next morning, I walked through the doors minutes after they opened. I think I probably said, I’m here for my dog right as I walked in. When I met him, his pure joy was immediately evident. I dropped to the floor and he was in my lap, giving kisses and wiggling like a bundle of energy. Within 30 minutes Hyde became Jasper and he was in my front seat, heading home with me.
The months since bringing Jasper home have been filled with miles of trails, though he usually doubles my mileage with his constant exploration. In addition to being the best and most loyal adventure buddy, Jasper brings a smile to everyone who meets him. His happiness is so contagious. When we are on the trail, people always comment on two things: his unbridled joy and how well he navigates the terrain on three legs. My hope is those who meet Jasper will feel inspired. Whether it’s to persevere through a hardship, find adventure and fun in their daily lives, or consider adopting a differently abled animal. Each day he makes me laugh and I love his ability to bring out my silliness. He gets me outside even on the coldest of days and is a constant reminder of what’s really important in life.
