HEADS, I GO GET HIM. TAILS, I DON'T
I had been searching for a rescue pup for years but, after several visits to shelters and foster homes, I had yet to find the dog for me. I had stopped looking when my best friend sent me a picture of this smiling white ball of fluff. I stalked his profile for days before I finally contacted the shelter about Jimmy (Lou's name at the time). I set an appointment but I got cold feet, I wasn't sure I was ready.
A week went by and I still checked his page daily. A couple days before my birthday, my friend gave me an ultimatum: either adopt him or let it go. I decided to flip a coin (because this is how grown-ups make important decisions). Heads, I go get him. Tails, I don't.
I looked down at the quarter in my hand and it was tails. I instantly deflated. As the quote states, I knew when that quarter was in the air, what my decision was. I already loved this dog. I immediately called the shelter, hopped into the car and the rest is history.
Aside from all the known benefits of having a dog, Lou is more than just that. I swear he's part human and he has a way of making me laugh even at my lowest points. But his joy extends out beyond just me. My friends and family are often more excited to see Lou than to see me.
Adults, kids and even too-cool-for-school teenagers, everyone has the same reaction when he comes bounding in the room, all bouncing, white hair and pink tongue: LOOOOUUUUUUUU!!!!
He's a goofball who is often running around with the case of the zoomies. Run run run with his butt tucked up under him then he launches himself sideways at your legs. It's the funniest thing. He makes himself at home on nearly any lap as long as there are endless belly rubs.
I don't know Lou's past but I suspect it wasn't easy on him. Through whatever he experienced, he was still smiling when I saw him and is always smiling now. He's a reminder to me that, no matter what happened or what you're afraid of, there's so much to be happy about and so much fun to be had. I'm so fortunate that Lou waited for me at the rescue and that I listened to my heart. We were both given the gift of unrelenting love and endless smiles.
