GIVE THEM LOVE AND SAFETY
We started out with one rescue dog, Levi. He was a very submissive dog, and we had to learn how to be gentle and compassionate around him to help him overcome his fear and anxiety. Over the past ten years he has become the most loving, well behaved, and sweetest dog ever.
Of course, this led us to adopt another rescue, and then two more. Emma, a black lab, was a police dog who didn’t bond with her trainer and was afraid of the dark. We spent days with her on our lap on the couch just loving her, letting her know she was safe. JoeJoe was our next little rescue. The very first day we had him, we walked into the living room only to see his little tail sticking out of a big bag of chips. He had managed to crawl completely into the bag and was inhaling the chips. It took some coaxing and special food preparation for him to finally realize dog food wasn't that bad. Our last rescue, Zoey, has been an amazing addition to our pack. She loves to watch TV, burrow under blankets, and never leaves my husband’s side.
Our dogs not only protect and love each other, they constantly play, sleep, and eat together. Having four rescues come together from four separate backgrounds to become the pack they are today is amazing. By far, my favorite time of day with the dogs is in the evening when we all sit down together. The dogs pile on our family and each other without hesitation. I love being able to see them fall asleep and be so peaceful. These moments are when I am able to hold, hug, and give them love and safety.
My family has learned that dogs can survive horrible acts done to them, and then turn around and offer us incredible love, affection and companionship. What does that tell us? Life is about loving one another, seeking happiness with a snuggle and feeling the wind in your face.
