CBD For Dogs? The Results are in for "Canine Osteoarthritis"
Is your dog suffering from canine osteoarthritis? A new study suggests that CBD may help dogs with this painful arthritic condition.
Canine osteoarthritis is an inflammatory condition that affects at least 20% of all dogs. Dogs can become lethargic, irritable and reluctant to play, run or jump due to this painful disease.
Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine worked with a CBD brand on a 4 week study that included 20 large dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis. The dogs were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or one of three different options and evaluated before and after by both veterinarians and their owners based on factors related to mobility, pain, etc...Details about how much CBD they took was kept from everyone so there wouldn’t be any bias in evaluations.
The results of the study were very promising, with dogs who took CBD experiencing significant improvement in their mobility and quality of life!
In the CBD groups, dogs seemed happier and were able to do more. And although in some cases it didn't work for every dog, veterinarians saw a significant improvement in reduced pain and increased mobility. The owners reported their dogs feeling "miserable" before but after taking the CBD they started noticing a difference in their pets' wellbeing with movement around them becoming easier.
Even after the dogs stopped taking CBD, those groups were still showing improvement. There was strong evidence that the CBD was addressing underlying inflammatory issues and not just masking pain.
According to the study, none of the dogs have had any serious negative side effects.
Before starting a CBD regimen, we would encourage any pet owners to talk with their veterinarian and most of all, make sure they use a high quality CBD product.
There are a lot of products out there and not everything is made properly, so make sure to only use brands that can show lab tested results on the label for accurate dosing information and free from contaminants.
At the beginning of 2021, we interviewed DOPE.dog on our podcast to learn even more about the impact of CBD, make sure to listen to that episode here.
